We've learned that it's English, ca. 1700-1750.

Pretty much. They said it was "very interesting," wondered if some of the thread might be missing (it isn't) and suggested we contact someone locally about selling (we don't want to sell). Nothing about subject matter or value.

I'll keep it positive by saying I guess we should be happy that they wrote at all, since they're doing this for free.  Beyond that, no comment.

So far it's the only sure information they've given me. :)

I've sent pics to a few people for another opinion. Seems later to me but i've little interest in tapestrys so haven't the background as in other areas / genres.

Most 18th century i've seen have greater detail and have been done by someone with a better hand. This looks more like the Victorian samplers but with an 18th century design

Tapestry is not my area either but both this and the piece they had looked to me like it was done on a loom and then highlighted by hand !!  I couldn`t see much handwork !!  Of course looking at pics and looking at the real thing and not quite the same !!

Time to resurrect. The doubters take it on the chin again:

"This is English, 1700-1750."

Steven and Carol Huber, Connecticut USA

They're specialists in high-end tapestries. Check out their website. They know their stuff.

The needlework is incredibly detailed, especially within the "castle." Oh yes, and the value is "*****. :))

Thanks Mart! I've got another inquiry out as well, so more info may be forthcoming.

Last night we found an appraisal for it from 1978 in a box of family records. It gave a dollar value and dated the canvas picture to 1650.

Adjusted for inflation, the value is now in XXXXX five figures. Yay!
