Bronze Owl Lamp Marked Geschutzt Glass eyes
« on: February 27, 2016, 08:56:24 pm »
Does anyone have any ideas on how to get any information on this lamp? It measures approx. 9 & 1/2" tall by 8" wide by 8" front to back. Very heavy for it's size. The eyes are glass and they light up when plugged in. Marked on the bottom plate "Geschützt" 5305. Thank you in advance!
Burton.

The word on the bottom is the German word for "protected" !!  Similar to our Patent numbers !!  Anything else written ??

Thank you for that info! No other words that I see except the Greek words across the front.

Very interesting that the owl is sitting on the Greek inscription!  AOHNAI is equivalent for the word Athens.  If you research Athena she is most often portrayed with an owl mascot!

Is the lamp metal?

Burton, you are replying just fine!

Mart, do you think is what we know as a "television lamp"? 1950's/1960's?

I do not think so !!  I think these were intended as a childs night light and the owl was a symbol of protection !!  TV lamps had the light behind the figure so the light was diffused and didn`t interfere with seeing the screen !!  This would have had the eyes shining forward into the viewers eyes !! Not good for watching those old  TV sets !!

Not so much protection, as wisdom. Of course that's a well-known folk attribute for owls, but it was one of Athena's most important characteristics as well.
