Is this Chair Savonarola, Renaissance or Gothic?
« on: March 30, 2016, 05:50:17 am »
Hello everyone

I purchased these 2 chairs about 4 weeks ago, as they were described as 'decorative chairs' and thought they would look lovely in my conservatory.

However after i paid and collected them, i did not realise just how big they actually were, and also just how heavy they are. But they are absolutely beautiful and solid made.

I have managed to find some examples on the internet, which swerves in the direction of Savonarola.. but then another search leads to me to Gothic.

Could anybody shed any light for me please as to what they actually are... savonarola, gothic or just a chair! :)

Many thanks in advance

Steve

Savonarola is the chair's design or type, not the style. I'd say the style is Renaissance Revival. Beautiful!

I've never found Savonarola chairs to be comfortable, though. :)

Many thanks.

So the style is Renaissance Revival.. i will look up more on this style.

And yes they are not very comfortable to be honest, but they do look amazing.

Many thanks for your help, much appreciated

Does your fold?

A true Savonarola chair folds and was made in the likeness of a Roman chair.  Yours IS later Renaissance style because it has a high back and more ornateness to the wood carving/decor.

I'm from the South - but please don't mistake my Southern Manners/Accent/Charm as a weakness!

Just got here and was about to suggest they be used as decorative (as was stated) rather than to sit in !!  Not comfy at all !!

Thanks everyone for your help. I guess i'll keep them as decorative chairs as they are an eye catcher.

Thanks again
