need help with painting
« on: June 14, 2016, 03:55:15 pm »
hello, i acquired this picture from a local thrift store a week ago and was trying to figure out who the artist maybe? i tried doing some research on my own but i couldnt make out the signature that well so it made it hard for me to try and find any information on the artist. the picture appears to be old though and looks like it could be a watercolor painting. also its behind glass in an old frame. on the back of the picture you can see old wooden panels. so also was wondering what era it could be from? i tried taking the best pics i could get so i hope they will do. thank you for your time for looking at it and if you have some information im all ears! thank you for your time!

Well,, like you I can not make out the signature !! It is an excellent and well done watercolor !!  That alone narrows down the field !!  Can you tell me where you found this painting location wise ??  Appears to be an English scene !!  I assume you have not had it out of the frame ??

Yeah it is hard to make it out mart. I even tool a magnifyer to it and still couldn't make it out! And thanks mart. I actually found the painting at a thrift store in belleville illinois. I have not had it out of the frame cause I was afraid of damaging the paper. It appears to be old though but having a hard time with this signature.

I tried to enhance the visibility of the signature, but without much success:

My guess would be late 19th-early 20th century. Lots of landscape painting going on then.

Thanks ghopper! Yes it does mart and the second letter after the k appears to be an "i" also the last 4 words in the name appear to be "sbry" what I look at it in a loop

When she says she is trying to get the corn in she literally means get the corn in!  Mart is a true Texas farm gal!

haha ok sounds good mart! it measures 20 in long 24 1/2 in wide (framed) the painting itself measures is 10 in tall and 14 1/2 in wide but it is bigger than that cause there is a matting over it. haha KC!

KC it's possible..I'm trying random artist that have similar looking names hoping mine would show but the last 4 letters appears to be "sbry" if you zoom in closely. Why do artist signatures have to be cursive!! Lol

Unfortunately it is becoming a thing of the past.  There are many schools that are only teaching printing these days.

I do agree it does get difficult to discern signatures when people add artistic flare.
