Without knowing the size, I'll guess a "Tea light / Votive / Fairy Lamp"...perhaps sold at a Home Décor party?

Mid century fairy lamp !! Used with tea lights gives a nice pattern when used at night !!

Years ago when most ladies had long hair, many of the styles of the day required wrapping the ends in a manner that we would use a rubber band or pony tail band !!  Ladies would comb/brush long hair and whatever was in the brush/comb was removed and placed in a hair receiver !! A hair receiver was made the same as your item,,bowl and lid with hole in the top !!  Then they would use the hair to wrap the ends of a long braid before pinning it in place !!  I can remember when my grandmother wore styles like that !!  Her hair was below the waist so she used a hair receiver !!  She braided each half as for pigtails then crossed the braids over the top of her head and pinned them !! There were other ways the hair could be recycled as well !!  Even for jewelry !!

Only difference in yours and those above is I remember yours and have owned a few just like it !!  They were popular in the 60`s !!

Mart, it could be my eyes deceiving me, but it appears that the dome/top isn't as tall and slender as the fairy lamps that I remember.

kdj, how tall is the entire piece?  how tall is the bottom piece and how wide?  How tall is the lid piece and how wide?
Also, what is the width of the hole in the lid?

They made both the taller ones and the shorter fatter ones depending on the maker !!  Many of these were flashed glass as mine were !! But I had a pink that was not flashed !!  Most of the taller ones that I have seen were clear !!   All of the colors I have seen were pink, red, and clear !!  I have not ran across any of another color !!  Could be but I have not seen them !!  The prisms of the glass threw  a pattern on the walls that flickered at night !!  Like a disco ball back in the 60`s !!  No  point in the prisms just to put old hair in !!

These are the ones like you are talking about !! Several different companies made these and each may be slightly different !!  The one in the link was more expensive than mine !!
