The $150 dog's water bowl
« on: September 05, 2016, 02:25:54 pm »
My mother's aunt had been using this as a water bowl for her cat and mini Schnauzer at the family summer home.
I knew it was fairly old, and when nobody else wanted it (when the property was sold) I grabbed it.
My brother scrubbed out the lime and calcium build up inside and VIOLA!!
Perfect condition.

Here's what I was told at the Red Wing web site....
Red Wing Sponge band Casserole.  Without lid, the value is around $150 if in perfect condition.  The Sponge band stoneware was introduced in the late 1920's by the Red Wing Stoneware Company.

a dog dish
pffft

I really really like that story!!!!

My aunt had a similar story that she would put her bacon grease in a bowl next to the stove.  It was discovered by my cousin and they sold it for over $90.  Amazing that the heat didn't break it over the years!

A good ole “cheap” heavy stoneware bowl was “perfect” for use as a “water bowl” for one’s pet animal(s) simply because it wasn’t very easy for their pet(s) to up-end it, dumping their water (or food) ……. all over the floor. :o :o :o

YUP, and a lot of those “cheapy” but heavy stoneware bowls got cracked or broken over the years ……. and that is why some of the surviving bowls are now worth $30 to $300+ as collectables.   ;D ;D ;D

I just went back and re-read that.
Clearly, I didn't see talesofthesevenseas mentioned in the post.

Nope.
Chicago born and raised.

I actually am blind in one eye, and when I take off my glasses I can't see out of the other.
