Oval solid oak (?) Kiel table
« on: January 20, 2017, 10:01:57 am »
I've recently acquired this table from a storage unit.  I love it, so might want to keep and not sell it.  However, I would like to know more about it, since I found the tag in the drawer space.  The table's dimensions are this:  top 28" x 46", it's 28" tall.  The base is approximately 17 1/2" x 36 1/2".  The drawer is missing, but the space for it is 25"wide x 4" tall and ~21" deep.  I have more photos, but could only attach 4.
It appears to be from The Kiel Furniture Company.  The hand-written number is 608-1.  It is incredibly well built, as you can see by the hardware picture.  I am sad that the drawer is missing, but hoping it could be replaced.  The picture of the tag (DSC05458) is the best I could get of the tag without removing it - it is attached with nails!
Anyhow, if anyone can provide any insight on the table and maybe where/how to get the drawer replaced, it would be much appreciated!
TIA!

The Kiel Furniture Company operated under that name in Milwaukee from 1907-35, after which it changed its name to Laune (I think); its still in business today.

Your table does seem to be solid oak. Its in the Empire Revival style, so I would think it dates closer to 1907 than 1935. Without the drawer its probably worth something like $100 or so. If you want a replacement drawer, I'd look up the company in their present incarnation and see if they have any pieces to match.

Ghopper is correct !!  Can you take a pic straight on of the top ??  Ordinarily these are oak tables but this one looks like it may be maple which a few companies did use !!  This pic is not close enough to tell !!

Thanks so much!  Yes, here are two of the top.  It seems to have a reddish tinge.  And I am hoping the dings on the top can be sanded out.

I found the company!  A. A. Laun Furniture!  http://aalaun.com/.  That company has been taken over by Schu Industries (I think that's what she said).  I am sending them photos to see if they can help get the drawer replaced.

The grain pattern did not show well but looks like it did have the oak pattern !!  May be just a lighter stain !!  Nice table even if not worth a lot,,,I like it !!  Hope you get the drawer !!

WHOA, ...... waitaminute.

Are they "dings" as in depressions or creases ....... or "dings" as in scratches or gouges?

If depressions or creases you can oftentimes ....... iron them out.

Like "pressing" an article of clothing, ..... use an extra-damp piece of cotton cloth and the "tippie" end of a clothing iron to "steam" out the crease.

Yes thats a good tip if the dings are impressions in the wood itself !!  I didn`t see anything major but pic is not a close one !!

I have a questions about the top as well.

Is the top solid or is it a veneer that is "creasing"?  Makes a big difference in how you restore it like cogar said you would iron out if it is a veneer or warped section.

I am sure the top is solid, or should I say, made of solid maple boards or planks. The joints of the planks extend or can be seen in the edge of the table.

If the top was veneered there would (probably) only be one (1) seam across the center of the top.

Just my opinion. ;D

Great feedback - thanks so much!  Unfortunately, they are gouges in the top - I can feel them and how deep they are.  Like someone used it as a workbench!!!  The top is make of planks, not veneer.  I have some closer pictures of the grain as well.
