Old vase antique? sand majolica?
« on: February 09, 2017, 07:54:42 pm »
This item (vase?) was given to me by mother who was in her mid-70's a few years ago; she told me it was old and antique, passed down to her from her grandmother to her mother (they lived in the US SE/Carolinas region; that's all I know about its origin).

As shown in the pictures, it is about 7in tall and 5in by 2.5in wide; it has a sort of 'H' shaped mark on the bottom (the H mark looks somewhat like an upside down Honda 'H' logo); it has what seems like a medium-grain sand-covered outer surface; it has a sand/tan color appearance with some gold-colored accents on the handles and flowers.

Any info, opinion, or reference about it and whether it is an antique?  Appreciated, thanks!

Update: From another forum, I was informed my item may be 'sand majolica' (see eg 'floral majolica pillow vase' on rubylane website), but I am still seeking more info, opinions, references about it, thanks!

It does look like ca. 1900 sand majolica that someone may have painted gold later. We had a big set of sand majolica at one time, loved it, but now it's almost worthless, sorry to say.

Thank you for your response, I'm sorry to  hear that it may be less valuable than believed.

Ah well, I'm far from a sand majolica maven, so don't be downhearted.  ;) Based on the ones we sold, your value would be around $20-$30, but thats in the midwestern U.S. Maybe more in your area?

There are actually some pieces being sold but color and ornamental details make a difference in demand.  Like this blue one, it will most likely sell but as you can see it isn't a large amount.

Thanks for the responses.  KC, I see your example was made in the 1960s, but the different color/ornamental detail is noted.

I've had no luck identifying the maker from the mark and maybe narrowing down when it was made (although I do think it was around 1900 as ghopper1924 said).  Any help or suggestions on figuring these two things out?
