Three Dimensional Printing & Antiques
« on: March 07, 2017, 03:11:32 pm »
Interesting article this month in MAD about this new fangled printing, they are using it now in the restoration process to recreate missing parts. A computer inkjet page printer is a 2D or two-dimensional device. Inside, an ink cartridge zooms left and right on a rail, squirting colored droplets. Rollers move the paper down as the page is printed.

In a 3D printer, the ink cartridge is replaced by an “extruder,” which oozes droplets melted off a reel of plastic filament. The extruder is moved left and right, up and down, and back and forth on three sets of rails or swinging arms. A computer tells the printer where to deposit plastic based on stored data. It is a fascinating process to watch

Very cool stuff, i am impressed. Read the entire article here

Amazing. Zany hip soundtrack too! ;D

I could so use a rendering like that to replace a lost part on one of my etageres. The piece is too fragile to move out of the house to somebody's workshop, and nobody will bring their tools to the house to work on it.

Have you seen they can print a house?!
Modify the ink jet  to a "cement jet".
and it's relatively cheap, too!!

ALSO, the applications for it to be used in surgery (replacement bone/joints) is amazing!

We just installed our new 3D printer in my elementary school and used it last week.  I will be going to courses. Hoping to lead the students in programming it.  :D

In an elementary school???  Wow!  Was it donated? An endowment?   If not you have a terrific educational budget!

It is a wealthy town - Cohasset MA, but not part of the budget. A grant was written and funded by CEF Cohasset Educational Fund a group of pro-education town's people and parents that raise fund for things beyond the regular budget.  Grant was for $11,050 to purchase the printer, a years supplies and training for two teachers.

Actually, you don't need a 3 D printer for that shops furniture, you can buy a line by line copy of their stuff built the same way it was in the 18th century, by hand. Naturally, that kind of furniture ain't cheap...........http://www.jeffreygreenenewport.com/construction.htm

Well, cheap & shell carved RI furniture are 2 things that don't go together! unless you want a plastic piece of furniture which kind of misses the whole concept of goddard/townsend stuff.
