This is Nippon, but what is it? There's a whole in the bottom.

These were used to conceal jelly jars or other condiment jars, for a elegant look ,you pushed jar up & out by sticking your finger into the hole of the plane jar as not to spill it. Also used for holding condensed milk but usually had an under plate.

Thank you. They did things so elegantly back then.

Wendy nailed it!

Yes they did do things more elegantly.  Our modern technology didn't make it easier to "slow down". Instead we have become "busier"!  :(

Also being a housewife was a career. I think today it's looked down on.

It is often.  It is especially by younger women in many countries!

FYI, the hole was in the bottom for more than being able to push up.  Many times there isn't a hole and the snug can causes a suction or stuck can.  Thus the hole so no suction and if it was stuck you could at least push it up!

Technology, 😊. I love the idea of making the jar disappear. I want to try it now.

Yes,  KC & when used for condensed milk, the milk was firm but would sweat so the condensation would run out of the hole onto the under plate to be discarded.

I remember the first time I came across these jars. I was invited by an older Lady to look at and buy some of her items, and included were a few of the new-to-me jars with a hole in the bottom. She explained to me that she and her sister had a Tea Room back during the Depression, and the jars were used on a daily basis for serving preserves. She went on to tell how they had jars of homemade jam or jelly sealed with paraffin on the top. After running a knife around the paraffin, they would empty the entire contents directly into these jars with the paraffin at the bottom covering the hole

That was I good idea but with my luck the paraffin would leak and I would have to lick the preserves off the table !!
