Rococo Style Print
« on: April 02, 2017, 02:21:17 pm »
Hi everyone,

I need help identifying the original artist of this print. It's not an antique, but a high quality vintage print. I believe it to be a Lithograph print. Rococo Style painting.  No markings on the print and no visual signature. Does anyone recognizes this work?

Mart....It was professionally mounted and framed, the writing is in pencil or the measurements for the framing work.  The actual print measures approximately 13 1/2" x 11", adhered to paper measuring approximately 19 x 16 1/2". Picture below of front and back.

The way the trees are done reminds me a little of Gainsborough`s work !!  But have no idea what the title of this one is to look it up !!

The child's direct gaze looks more like Reynolds. However, the woman's clothing looks neoclassical ca. 1830s. To complicate things, the Victorians dressed both young boys and girls like girls. Since the woman (mother?) is holding arrows, it could be a love allegory with the child as cupid.

Ghopper1924..WOW! Interesting theory.  I see exactly what you are saying. Still at it, finding it a good challenge though.  Thanks for your point.

Well... I found the signature!!  Happy! Happy! Happy!.. But I can not make out the signature,  I've been working on it all morning trying to photo shop the signature.  Please take a look and see if anything jumps out at you.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Oh, I also believe this print to be one of the "Old Master Prints"  Earlier in the thread I mention I thought it was a lithograph.  I feel certain it is not a lithograph, but either a engraving or woodcut. (close examination with magnify glass and high resolution scanning shows no dots... YAY!)

Just a suggestion that may help !!  Its way too dark for me to make out the letters !!  If you have a clear sheet protector and a felt tip pen,,open the sheet protector an place it over the signature then try to trace the lines that you can see !!  Careful not to rub the felt tip ink,, it will not dry permanent on plastic !!  Then take  a pic of what you traced and post it !! Maybe we can see enough to jog the brain cells !! Check the sheet protector to make sure it has no leaks or holes by putting it on top of a sheet of typing paper and writing on it !!  And don`t get ink on your hands !!  Have to be careful trying this !!

I've become crossed eyed look at this signature in an attempt to catch the best angle.  I thought one time it looked like "gauffier" (surname) with possible date as "88".  I found a Louis Gauffier in my search but no example of signature available without a subscription to host websites.

Mart..Thanks for suggestion, I will try that,  The signature image is very dark, I've tried different lighting including black light, in an attempt to decipher.  I'll give your suggestion a shot.
