Found a Lighted Sign that "the Pickers" would really like!
« on: June 18, 2017, 07:27:14 pm »
We found this huge star/arrow lighted sign in the top of the barn in Tennessee. It is big, about seven feet tall and looks to be in very good shape, other than needing rewiring, bulbs, and maybe some sockets. It does not appear to need any restoration, it looks pretty darn good as it is.

Cool though it may be, about the last thing I need is a giant, light-up star and arrow flashing outside my barn, so I'm going to sell this one. After we get it functional again, what would I ask for a sign like this and where on earth would I sell it? Should I call Mike and Frank the Pickers? They do have a second Antique Archaeology storefront in Tennessee.

I think one of the big advantages with this sign is that it is unbranded, so that it could be used in any retro business. I agree, some research into the value is needed before I approach anyone about selling it.

What I find unusual about this sign is that the star is opposite end of the arrow.  It is more common to see the blinking signs done opposite.

They seem to be selling for around $1k. One in very good condition with " OPEN " down the arrow shaft went for $3k.

Maybe it's a shooting star?

A similar one was called a shooting star by one site. Thanks for the comparable pricing, that helps confirm what I thought it might be worth. From here the next step will be to lower that puppy out of the loft of the barn an see what kind of shape it is in. That will take a bit of time as Bruce is recovering from an injury to his hand.

Sorry to hear that he got hurt.  Here's praying for a "patient" man that will allow the time to heal without over doing it and to heal quickly!

I'm posting a follow-up on the sign. Not long after my last post Bruce (fiance) had an "argument" with a table saw. He lost part of several fingers. Under the circumstances we didn't want to get into rewiring the sign, buying all the bulbs etc. So we ended up selling to a local dealer for $500. I also got a very nice pair of early 1800s andirons that we needed for one of the little upstairs fireplaces. You're not going to believe this, but when the dealer plugged it in, the darn thing worked like a champ! It is noisy as all heck, but boy does it flash! He ended up putting bulbs in one side and selling it to a local business. It will be fun to see it up there flashing away! The dealer recommended having it properly rewired before that happens, but I will post a follow up video at some point if the new owner gets it done.

Whoa!  When you initially said he hurt his hand...you didn't say that he ROYALLY HURT HIS HAND!!!!

Here's to a speedy recovery and hoping praying he adjusts well with his loss!

Great sale/price on the sign and glad you found some andirons!

Bruce has done really well. It's been very admirable how well he's taken the whole thing, and that he has been able to maintain a sense of humor about it. Yes, he has been called "Stumpy" a few times!

Here are the andirons that we got, with fake fire, in one of the upstairs hearths. According to the dealer these were from a collector friend of his who passed away. They are early 1800s. They are very definitely hand forged.
