Antique dish?
« on: July 07, 2017, 08:09:19 pm »
Any ideas what this could be?  It is kidney shaped with gold embossing, raised flowers and dots.  Measures 7 1/2" long x 4" wide x 1" tall.  I would appreciate the help in its identification and maker.  On the back it is marked 68120 or 6812C.  Thank you much.

It appears that you have a beautiful crescent shaped bone dish.  Bone dishes were used at more formal settings and were placed at the top left side of a charger plate/dinner plate to put discarded fish bones.  This was a very common piece used in Victorian times and is still used in very formal settings.  With the availability of fish without bones and the lack of need for a dish/utensil for every type of food these pieces were once sets that have been broken up over time.  Usually seen now for knick-knacks or used at dressing/vanity tables.

Thank you KC - now that I know it's a bone dish (guess I've never set a formal table to have known what this was), I found three listings - 1 said 1800's circa, 1 said 1945, and the other just said antique.  I think it would be safer to say "vintage".  Thank you so much.

Mart, I would agree on the time period!
maa1247, I haven't been to a fish dinner using these either - just am fascinated with all the serving pieces and gadgets that the Victorians came up with.  They became so food specific with purpose of serving pieces that would elevate the "haves" from the "don't haves".  Sadly, once the aspiring "don't haves" got to where they could afford specialty items/service pieces - most became "out of popularity" for various reasons.
