Value on Flambe Vase?
« on: July 18, 2017, 07:36:17 am »
Greetings:

I found this flambé vase at an auction over the weekend here in Missouri. It measures 17" tall by 7" wide. My feeling is that it's an Austrian vase in an iron cradle, made ca. 1910. It looks to be in the Vienna Secessionist style with the imported Japanese elements that they so often incorporated. The bottom is unmarked, though holes have been drilled in it to secure the bottom and handles.

I can't find another one anywhere, so what do you think re: value?

Pictures aren't crystal clear but I'd have said 1910-20 at the latest, but not Austria.

Thanks Ipcress. I now believe you're right about it not being from Austria, or Germany for that matter.

I've been researching this with folks at the "other" site, as well as an auction house in New Jersey with a specialist in Art Nouveau/early 20th century. The consensus is that this is not 20th century, but rather Victorian ca. 1870, and probably from France. Multiple sources agree that replacement value is about $500 U.S.

How does the hole affect the value?  Was it made into a lamp at one point?

I wouldn't rule out British and 500 has the potential to be on the cheap side

Hi PeLady:

The hole(s)  does not affect the value, because it was made that way. There is a hole in the base, and one in each side, so that the metal base can be secured (through the finial) and the handles can be secured as well. It was never a lamp.

Ipcress, perhaps "Anglo-French" covers it  ;D What is your idea on value? Rago auctioneers in New Jersey put replacement at $500, which is more or less what I thought. Would you go to $750?

On what I can see, yes.

That style of flambé is more British than continental Europe ( Doulton, Bernard Moore but this seems earlier ) and those handles and paw feet base...

I wish I could examine it first hand !

I think Ipcress is right !! But who said Art Nouveau ??  More 1920`s Art Deco !! Like Ipcress said 1910 to 1920 !!  I think early in the Art Deco period !!  Art Deco style,,Victorian Revival period !!  Characteristics of both !!

Those  clearly show French influence,, yours does not !!  Still going with Ipcress on this one !!
Have you examined the metalwork closely for marks ??  A foundry mark would help !!

Like I said, same vase, different metal.

There are no foundry marks or any other kind of identifying marks on the metal.

Beautiful piece.

I also see this as art deco in style. (If it weren't for this styling on the mounting I would have said 1850's to 1900's)  This most likely was a garniture (garnitures are a set of matched vases used to garnish/decorate cabinets, mantles, large dining tables, etc.  These sets were highly prized in Britain, Europe, France from late 1600's to mid/late 1800's - but customers could purchase 1 or more.)  Most were porcelain (you will see this more in earlier pieces).

That said, the value would have been more with the matched set.  HOWEVER, in this day/time most people do not have the need/want for a matched set unless they are collectors/designers/the wealthier!

Provenance/Makers marks would definitely increase the value of this piece as you know - however, not all pieces were marked even up to the early 1900's from many makers.  If you search you will see lots of French Gilt/Bronze mounted Chinese flambe' glazed porcelain.

I also wish I could see it up close!!!!  I would love to give you a $$$ but will bow to the others on the $500 replacement (however, it most likely is more).
