19th century (probably) oil paintings
« on: August 01, 2017, 05:27:08 am »
Hi, sorry for my english for I am not native speaker, but I will try my best, feel free to correct me of course.. :)
I have issues in indentifying some signatures / paintings, my grandfather was a collector of old oil paintings, some of them without signatures ( I was told they were re-framed years ago ), If anyone have any idea about these I will be thankful.. :)

Do you know if these were originally without signatures ??  That would be very unusual for the time !!  Is it possible with the re-framing it was just covered up ??  That would not be unusual to find if the canvas was re-stretched and tightened !!

I do not know if these were originally with or without signatures, canvas do not look like it was tightened but I am not sure, I can only guess.. I asked my parents but they do not know much more, only that the second one was cut off when re-framed, not much of professional work, but they are certain there was a signature before re-framing.. other two paintings nobody knows.. Grandfather passed years ago and I am not sure if he knows anything about it too, as far as I know he collects these oil paintings and most of them were gifts from his friends.

If it was cut off at re-framing then it was re-stretched and tightened !!  That is the only reason to trim the canvas !!  Of course back then they would not have thought about the paintings being worth money,, or that the children and grandchildren would be researching them !!
Since pics do not do the paintings the justice they deserve,, my suggestion would be to take them to a qualified art gallery !!  They may recognize the style and be aware of the signature !! Its always possible that they could be worth quite a bit from what I see !!  Just do not sell them if they offer !!  That would tell me they are less than ethical in their business !!  You just need information now !!
May I ask what country/town your Grandfather was in when he received/purchased the paintings ??

Thank you for advice. I will try to make better photograps when I will be at my parents home, there are more paintings than these, one of them is signed MÁRK L. (or Z.), I found out it probably could be from painter Márk Lajos but I am not certain.. My grandparents and grand grandparents (mother told me it is quite possible few of the paintings were gifts from her grandfather but is not sure) lived in Austria-Hungary (back then it was, he was born in 1892), now it is Slovak rep.
