Older Vintage Trinket Box

Measures approx. 6.5" x 4" & 2" deep. Has a very old musty smell inside.

Looks like it's made out of hard cardboard or thin wood? Has black lacquer.

Has anyone seen anything like this before? By how it appears, could you give a time period estimate, or possible worth?

Yes, papier mache was my first guess as well. Probably Victorian era, 1850-1900. I've never seen one like it, so I can't give it a value offhand.

Was thinking papier mache as well.  Please post pics of the inside of the box.

Try searching antique papier mache tea caddy, papier mache jewelry casket, papier mache card box, papier mache desk box, papier mache stationary box, etc.

I have had very good luck removing musty smells from trunks that are wood/cardboard/leather with this method:

VINEGAR & OTHER ODOR ABSORBING SUBSTANCES
Fill a plastic or glass container/ bowl with vinegar and place inside. Close wait a few days to see if the vinegar absorbs the odor.  I have also tried baking soda and kitty litter loose inside or containers.  I have seen other odor absorbing substances like charcoal and coffee grounds suggested.  They may also help but I have never tried them.

If it were hand painted I would say the same thing !!  But since this is a cut and paste and a small box,,I think $200. would be tops !!  Why do you say Russian ??

I totally have to agree about the difference between hand painted and a decoupaged piece.  Hand painted would yield a higher value.
