The Bull Dog looks like Majolica to me but I wanted another opinion to verify, date the item, and locate origin.  He measures 10-1/2" X 11" X 20-1/2", and weighs about 25 pounds. There is no hallmark on the bottom.

MarthaHill suggested I try this forum.....many thanks to her!

Photos have been attached.  Should you require more, please let me know.  I appreciate any comments you may have.

Best Regards!

Shur looks like it might be Majolica.

Maybe its just the photos or is the glazing kind of a matte or semi-gloss finish ?

Hey there SophieMarie !!  Glad to see you here !!

Cogar it looks to be a matte finish !!  If you enlarge the back pic you can see it has been combed !!  I think very early English pottery but not majolica !!
Figured we needed more opinions on this !!

Mart, my question about the "matte finish" was my polite way of saying ...... I didn't think it was Majolica.

The "posing" of the Bulldog and the "green" base is enough to make one think it is Majolica.

For example, like so:

True but I have never seen a combed finish on a majolica piece !!  Kind of blows the reason for the tin/lead glazed finish !!

Thanks to you both!

I've taken a few more pictures to give you a better view, hopefully.  I would say that the finish is not matte, but maybe a semi gloss to a gloss.  However, the most gloss is seen on the face, pillow, legs, arms and base.

While this piece is "combed", I would ask you to view this link:

I realize this is a Frie Onnaing French pitcher, but the design of the pitcher somehow reminds me of the umbrella stand.

When I first saw the umbrella stand, I thought Majolica but now am uncertain!

Hi Cogar and Mart,

I surely hope that you do not find me annoying yet, but I'd like for you to view another link for me.  This is for another Majolica vase (a pug), and this one appears to have some "combing" on parts of the figure.  And the hands and feet appear similar to the umbrella stand. The seller of the item also has a picture from a catalog which mentions Staffordshire England.

I'm asking you to refer to this link so you may enlarge the photos.  http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/362119560781?vectorid=229466&item=362119560781&rmvSB=true

Thanks again for you help...it is truly appreciated.

This is my last post for the evening, but perhaps I should have searched for pitchers instead of umbrella stands! More pictures of a pug pitcher c 1800 for your review please.  If they are too large, I will send two at a time.  Goodnight all!

I have searched for a majolica pug sitting on a cushion (or on a pillow or tufted pillow) and came up many - but none looking like yours.

There are pug lamps... (oil and electric)

This doesn't look like a umbrella stand to me.  A centerpiece?  vase?

I said on the other forum that it looked like Staffordshire !!    And it could be majolica,, lord knows there are many different types !! It just didn`t give me that feeling !!  As to the others that showed some combing,, goes to show I have not seen everything !!  ;D

KC she said the size was 10 1/2X11X20 1/2,,and about 25 lbs !!  Pics are hard to tell size !!

Where is Ipcress ??  Wonder if he has seen any similar from Staffordshire !!

KC and Mart,

The latter photos were Majolica pitchers which were selling online....not umbrella stands!  I was just trying to find a similar technique style, etc because I came up without anything on umbrella stands...sorry, if I was unclear.

Best Regards!

PS.  Now I know who Mart is...well sort of ha!
