I've never seen anything quite like it. Call it a German Victorian worktable ca. 1900.

You think it is all original Mart or a married piece?  Dimensions?

Would love to pics of undersides of top, sides and bottom!

Is there any wear pattern to the top?

Reminds me of an old bakery/patisserie table...that could be used for work and display!  Very intriguing...like the more I look at it!  This would be such a wonderful piece for someone to use as a kitchen island!

German construction is known for being "heavy", even here in america & also for their iron strap work on chests dating to the middle ages so that's the reason i guess german.

I do not see anything that looks like a married piece,,I think its all original !!  Oh,, great idea KC !!  I would refinish the bottom or leave it as-is and sand the top to reveal the wood,, then oil finish !!  Would make a great island or work table in the kitchen !!  The value of these tables is not great,,maybe $100. but if redone so someone can use it immediately and it looks good,, price goes up depending on area sold !!

and sand the top

UHHHHHHH NOOOOOOOO, no sand paper! everything else, yes! Table needs some finish restoration but i would start by just a good cleaning to see where table is located. Looks like it has been ebonized or painted black.

Threatens to put the old woman on her stump in the corner if she don't BEHAVE! You do not need to sand it to get it clean however, if it's paint which it might be & contains lead, you might consider stripping it. A good cleaning is first step however!

If it went into a "working kitchen" the top would have to have a wee bit of work - or be fitted with a marble, travertine or soapstone top!

I really like the looks of this table!!!!

This table might in fact be American, arts & crafts, C 1890 or so. Is that metal strap work brass? And how about the wood, is it quarter sawn oak?

Your table reminds me of a similar styled one that I bought back in the 70's. I purchased it from a lady that in turn had bought it after WWII out in the Black Hills of South Dakota. It was designed with the lower shelf and brackets attached to the legs, along with a small drawer on each side. The history that came with it was that it had been a poker table from Deadwood. I can believe it, because of the dozens of cigar burns and rings left from bottles and glasses on the top surface. It did have a maker's mark on the bottom, but all I can remember is that it had a New York address. That said, I agree with jacon4 and believe yours is American made.
