1920 basketball team photograph
« on: January 16, 2018, 08:57:18 am »
Hey everyone, I bought this old photo at an antique store a while ago for about two dollars. I'm about to frame it and hang it up, but I'd like to know a little more about it if I could. It seems to be an original from the period. The ball they are holding says "1920 TSC Civil". Is it basketball? Im just a little confused by the kneepads that a few of the guys are wearing. Are they engineering students? Are old photos like this worth anything? Any insight would be appreciated!

Yes it is basketball. Yes they wore knee pads.

I see people asking 20 to 30 dollars on eBay.  If you look at past sales though they are actually selling for much less.

To add to PeLady`s post,, also read that children and ladies also wore knee pads to protect the legs from damage!!  Guess it was a fashion statement too !!  The haves and the have nots so to speak !!  My knee pads are prettier than your knee pads !!    ;D

Okay, so I focused in on the word, CIVIL.  I was thinking maybe TSC stood either for Trenton State College (founded in 1855 and now The College of NJ), or Tennessee Supreme Court (1841).

Now, the question is:  Are those the male bodies of engineering students or attorneys with knee pads?

I'll let Mart be the judge of that ha!

Yeah, the 'TSC Civil' could be referring to a school, a specific program within a school, a company or outfit that they all work for etc. They all look college age to me though. I've tried googling it, and it wasn't too much help

Yes Skinny I think they look more like college students as well...but had no luck finding anything about Trenton State College basketball team in 1920.

I haven`t found anything on this team !!  No pics or info !!  Evidently  they were not that good !!
Try emailing the camp I linked to !!  If not theirs they may know of others !!  Yes I know its a Canadian team but its not unusual for things to wind up here !!  Especially if you live in he northern states !!
