Hibriten by Flair dining room set
« on: July 05, 2018, 09:11:14 am »
We recently received a dining set by Hibriten (made by Flair) and that is about all I know of it. We love it, but the color doesn't match our home and I was considering having it redone. I wanted to make sure I wasn't ruining this set by doing so first. Anyone know what the value is or type of wood?

Thanks so much - Mike

Hello,

Here is a photo of what your furniture would look like with different upholstery.  And, yes, I think it would be alright to do:)

HIBRITEN is actually a trademark for BERNHARDT FURNTITURE COMPANY.  In 1971, a U.S. federal trademark registration was filed for HIBRITEN by BERNHARDT FURNITURE COMPANY in Lenior, NC.  The trademark was filed and then expired in 1993.

It appears that the Flair division was launched in 1958 by BERNHARDT FURNITURE COMPANY:

"In 1958 a major new product category - upholstered furniture - was introduced with the launching of the Flair division. This new high-fashion look quickly made a name for itself with some of the most sophisticated buyers in America. Flair's creative styling and striking fabrics became a benchmark for others in the home fashion industry. During the sixties and seventies, Bernhardt continued to expand its manufacturing plants, showrooms, and offices to keep up with the increasing demand for its now broad line of furniture."

By viewing various photographs, I would estimate that your set was produced 1970-1980.

You will not devalue the set IF you reupholster it with a professional look and no damage is cause to set in the redo!

What a beautiful dining table! Can't guess what kind of wood it is by looking at the picture, but I would like to suggest you a very precious wood that is commonly used in Southeast Asia, which is the "fragrance" wood.
