Acanthus Candle holders, #529 - when made, markings
« on: December 01, 2018, 11:02:33 pm »
I recently purchased the Red Wing flower frog that is a cream/brown colored deer (gazelle?} with a matching platter.  It is usually displayed with two candle holders that are the cream and brown acanthus #529.  I have looked at them on various sites and have seen them with different markings on the bottom and different price points.  The markings that I have seen are "Red Wing", or "529", or some sort of illegible marking.  When I figure out how to get pictures off the auction sites to load here I will do so.  My questions are:

When were these candle holders made?  Are they vintage or recently made?  What should the correct markings be on the bottom?  What should the price range be for a pair of them?  I've seen them from $9.99 to $35.00.

Also, please let me know where or how I could have researched this information for my self.  What would be the best Red Wing book for the decorative items they made?

Thank you in advance, Judi Allen

https://www.realorrepro.com/article/New-Red-Wing-pottery

The above link will keep you up to date on most things selling today !!

https://www.redwingcollectors.org/32663/news/updated-stoneware-fakes-list-released-2

The things being faked due to higher prices you can find at the Red Wing Collectors Society !!  There is also a Red Wing for Sale group on facebook I have heard !!

The easiest way to research anything is to post it as a question on Google or whatever search engine you use !!  Then do the same thing for "fakes" !!  There is a difference between intentional fakes and reproductions !!  Many times when a pottery goes out of business other potteries purchase the molds !! Not sure if Red Wing did this but the collectors will know !!
Red Wing used several marks over the years so just because the marks are different,, they can still be original to the company !!  Their decorative marks are not the same as the marks on larger stoneware pieces !!
Use your eyes when possible,, look at the bottom of the item and see if the unglazed foot shows correct wear and discoloration for the age !!  No matter how good a housekeeper you are,, the unglazed foot will collect dust and should show it !! If its too clean with sharp edges,, pass,, there are always others on the market !!

This thread brings back some memories.
I remember back in 1973 when Lyndon Viel wrote an article on collecting Red Wing that appeared in the Minneapolis Tribune. After that, I would stop at small town drug stores that carried giftware, and look for Red Wing art pottery. Most of them had the Deer console bowl set on the shelf, priced at maybe $7-$8. Sometimes, a candle holder set was available for another $5. Oh, those were the good ol' days! ;)

As far as books: I would suggest the 2 on RW art pottery by Ray Reiss.
