id pottery bowl native american?
« on: July 30, 2019, 12:25:21 pm »
Hi, i was wondering if anyone could help me identify this pottery bowl with a rabbit design on it. I tried doing some research on it myself but couldnt find anything on it. Possible age? Any info would be great thanks. No signature or markings that i could find. It has a native american look to it but dont know for sure.

It's the black design on the top part of the bowl. Look at the last picture you will see the ears and eye.  The rest of the rabbit raps around the top part of the bowl.

Oh !!  Now I see it !!  Have to look from the top !!  I guess it could be from one of the native American potters but who,,I have no idea !!  The decoration looks hand done but the bottom looks to be a commercial pottery and not an independent potter !!  An independent potter would surely have marked his work !!

Yeah that's why I am confused because the top looks hand done but the bottom looks off.

Is the top rabbit part overlaid on the main body ??  Its a simple thing to do !!  The dark part is rolled flat and the design is just cut like a piecrust !!  Then slip is applied to the back and it is positioned on the main body of the vase then painted or glazed and fired !!  The main body has a look of Raku but I don`t see a lot of the color variations as on most !!  Of course that depends on many things !!

Hi, it might be overlaid. Here are a few closeups that might be better to see. It is raised.

Looking at photo #2 showing the bottom; that's not "writing" towards the lower righthand side is it? To my old eyes it almost looks like something was covered up. ???

I'm looking at about the 5:00 o'clock position on the backside. To me, it looks like something was there, and then covered up??? But it's late and I'm old...so probably my imagination is getting overactive again. ;)
