Strange Metal Rust Bunny
« on: February 28, 2020, 12:47:11 pm »
Have you ever seen anything like this? It is made from old roofing tin and stands about 18 inches tall. It looks like some person wanted to cover Easter And July 4th with one crude decoration but did not do it well. The back is the same as the front but not as rusty. It appears to be very old. My wife found it when the new owners of an old B and B were selling some of what was left behind. Is this folk art?

Rabbits/Hares have long been used in art.  I have seen it paired with nations' flags before and was told it represented rebirth/spiritual prosperity/abundance/fertility.

With that in mind...it is fitting to have it paired with the flag.

Just for grins I searched "rabbit holding holding American Flag" and came up with many examples.  Even Disney got in on it!

I WOULD consider this folk art!

Are the edges finished or rough cut !   Try looking through old 90`s issues of Country Living magazine !!  Back then rabbits and pineapples were popular as decor !! Country decorating was a big thing !!  The advertisers  sold tons of stuff made from rusty roofing tin !!  They were artificially aged so by now they would look as naturally aged !!  I think most were produced by small local companies !!  Check how the base, flag, star is attached !!

The edges look like they were cut with tin snips. The bottom is bent and nailed to the wood scrap. The wood is very old but that doesn't mean much. There is a piece of wire that hold that flag and star.  I vaguely remember item like that in the "country classics you can buy" section when country living was worth the price. I tried to post details but the site would not let me -- saying the the size was too large, even though they were taken with the same phone and filed the same. I have had this problem before
Had another item and could not list it for the same reason. Thanks to both of you for your answers

Its always possible that this is a copy cat of those in country living !!  Thats what we used to do !!  I wouldn`t spend $49.95 on something I could make myself !!

If it is a "bunny" rabbit, …… how come it doesn't have a "bunny" tail? :o :o :o
