Any Hubley Collectors Here? Dachshund Doorstop
« on: November 29, 2020, 11:45:34 am »
I have a cast iron doorstop that looks like Hubley #326 Adolf.  I put it on ebay after I got positive feedback from cast iron collectors on facebook.  I got a message, informing me that it's not an authentic Hubley, because it measures just over 5 1/2" tall, instead of 6 1/4" as listed in Hubley's catalog.

Any idea of the maker or this one or if there were any size variations in Hubley's doorstops?

There have been lots of repops when it comes to cast iron doorstops.  The things to look for in repops/fakes are a grainy feel to the paint, a less than perfect feel and look in the joint between the halves, and phillips head screws.

I can't tell if your piece has any of these issues. My first impulse was that yours is the real deal.

As far as I have seen Hubley never put Made in USA on any of their doorstops !

Dont' believe you have a Hubley here.  They are not marked MADE IN USA.  Usually have 3 numbers on them.

Believe this is yours?

I'm not going to start quoting the internet chapter and verse and provide links and such, but I did a little research and found several 1940s Hubleys marked "Made in USA." It wasn't the usual practice, but it happened.

That's what I've noticed, too

You may want to note that Hubley sold many of their original molds BUT BUT BUT....they removed their name/markings off of the molds so that they could not be exactly duplicated.

I have yet to find where Hubley ever put MADE IN THE USA on their pieces.

AC WILLIAMS COMPANY was a huge manufacturer of cast iron toys and made similar items like Hubley.

Wright bought all the doorstop molds in 1948 !   Hubley continued after that and did put Made In USA on a few of the later flower basket doorstops which they made after the purchase by Wright !  The  Dachshund  doorstop was made in the 30`s and is the catalogue from 1939 so it would not have been marked with anything other than the product number which I think is 326 !

https://www.doorstops.com/foundry/hubleyh.html

The above is info from the Hubley Mfg Co. foundry !  Last paragraph says that Hubley did not mark the full figures because it would spoil the look of the paint !  Hollow doorstops were marked on back and last with a paper stick on label !

Ha !!  Don`t give me a hard time Ghopper !!  I ain`t perfect,,, just close !! ;D
