Dinner Gong inside side-table???
« on: January 31, 2006, 10:37:10 pm »
Hello: I am relatively new to antiques although i do have a few in my possession which where left to me by my Grandmother who left us over 15 years ago.

I have in my possession what Granny used to call a dinner gong, but when I search on this it only comes up with what I would call the traditional gongs.

This piece is more like an xylophone built into a small wooden side table.  The lid lifts up and there are the brass notes.  Eachnote has a brass tube underneath and the striker is stored alongside.  It still plays quite beautifully, although sometimes it sounds like it could do with a bit of fine tuning!

As far as anyone can remember it was brought back by my Grandfather during WW2 from one of his trips overseas, I do remember Burma being mentioned, by my Granny.  but my Grandfather died before I was born.

Everyone admires this piece and asks what it is, but I cant tell them exactly, please can anyone help.
