White Chalky substance on my cut glass pieces

Hi again,

I've got another question:

I picked up a beautiful set of cut glass goblets, dessert dishes, glasses etc. today

I noticed that on the bottom of some of the pieces, there is a white, caulky substance on the glass (especially the ones with small crannies, grooves). Not even isopropyl alcohol would remove it.

I put them all through the dishwasher and no luck. What is this stuff? It does scrap off with a knife, but it's very stubborn and is really on there. Is there some "home remedy" concoction I can use that will disolve that gunk? You know....like "Haley's Hints" from PBS. The guy who makes all kinds of home cleaners and polishes, etc. LOL

This MAY work - but if it doesn't at least it's not "chemically"

Get some denture cleaner tablets - generic brand's okay - dissolve at least 3 in a large bowl of WARM not hot water - soak a couple of pieces overnight - see if it loosens the stuff -

The good news for you is that if it can be scraped off, it's not into the glass

a bit more chemical in nature - CLR - but - read the label carefully - you don't want to "etch" or scratch the glass -

Did you consider that since the stuff is on the outside, and on the bottoms, that they might have been set onto a painted shelf and it's just white paint?  You could try a little nail polish remover on a cotton swab -

Yes, I know that now. I know more about the mating rituals of the Eastern Barred Bandicoot than I do about glassware lol

I have noticed that the larger goblets are different than all the other glassware. Different design and seem to be of nicer quality. The goblets also do not have the noticeable "mold line" which runs vertically down the glasses.

whether pressed or cut glass, I got it all for free, so its all good

Okay who cares? you love it, it's nice, so now how's it cleaning up?  If you can get white stuff softened, save the fingernails - toothpics are great - lots of work -
