Unusual Coat Of Arms? Help Identify-History-Value?
« on: May 28, 2006, 05:28:13 am »
Hi,
I can not find any information about this item. What I know about it is that it measures approximately 2 feet high by 1.5 feet wide at its widest point[wooden carving-not including sword span]. Someone told me it is made of rosewood and it is heavily carved. It has a double-headed eagle with their mouths open and their claws are gripping eggs? or casters? set on a red felt? background. The hardware appears hand-painted and made of maybe pewter and brass? There are 7 spanish? swords[8-10" in length][I took the bottom sword out of the main picture of the coat of arms in order to show the little animal], 2 crossed-axes[one of them under the shield has a marking of XI in roman numerals]There are two medallions of a man but I dont know who he is. There is also a beribboned animal at the bottom but I dont know what type of animal. The breastplate[armor] recreates the entire coat of arms in its detail including the double-headed eagle and the little animal.  The main sword at the bottom of the coat of arms that I left loose is unusual in that it is the only one that has writing, it is hand scrawled "Made In Spain", it seems like it does not go with this piece, almost like the closest replacement because it looks like a letter opener and it is much bigger than the other swords but I am not sure. The shield also has "Spain" hand-painted on the inside in small black enamel paint[I think there is more writing but I can't make it out]. All of the painting appears hand-painted. All of the swords screw apart into 3 pieces[see 5th sword in pic]. The back of the plaque has a barb wire for hanging and two nailed in wooden rosewood? slats that look as if it slid onto a short 2x4 for sliding onto a door or wall in order not to fall[it is heavy-about 12-14 lbs-solid wood carved piece]. I think there is a piece missing out of the crown above the double-eagles heads because there is a hole in the top that you cant see in the pics. Can anybody help me understand what, where, when? of this piece. Can anybody value it? Who is that man in the medallions? What type of animal is that? What do the eagles represent and what are they holding in their claws? Is this an antique and what is its approximate value and age? Please see pics below. Thank you very much for any help you can provide.
