Porcelain Jar - What is it?

I have a 6" blue and white lidded porcelain jar.  There are handles on either side of the jar and on the lid.  The jar has a hole in the bottom.  I was told this was used for evaporated milk.  Any ideas?  Possibly a jelly jar?  There aren't any markings.  Thank you!

it's called a jam jar. it's sole purpose was to conceal a can of condensed milk (cream) often used in tea or coffee. what was the hole for? you picked up the container and inserted your finger in the hole and raised the cream so it could be grasped these were often seen in the 1930's.
