Bottles and stuff - junk?
« on: March 21, 2008, 07:35:14 pm »
is this the right place to post questions on bottles and stuff? or am i in the wrong place?

a Pyrex bowl.

Old Spice bottle.

this is a perfect sphere and is smooth. i guess it's a Marble ?

here is a coca cola bottle i just found. it has no cracks or anything, just part of the label is coming off.

what on earth is this?

my dog dug up a 1968 nickel yesterday lol. and i found three genuine boyd's caps for mason jars( all white and made of glass ) and a 1968 penny.
Am I digging up junk? im 15 years old and have NO IDEA what  im doing or the value of any of this, so im open to any advice or anything :D

You are posting in the right place. Congratulations on your ambition. It looks like your digging up an old dump site. One of my favorite things to do when I was younger was to dig up old farm dump sites. Glass and  pottery lasts a long time in the ground. The large pepsi bottle might bring a buck at auction. Anything with a screw on cap is going to be of newer vintage. The items you have here appear to be 1950's +. But you are headed in the right direction. The deeper you go, the older it gets. The only warning I would have is to look out for snakes when digging but from your photos, it appears you can handle that. Good luck with your endeavors.......... ...Tim

If it is hard packed clay, yes. As Tim said, an old dump site is just that, ...... a dump, usually where "it" was dumped over the bank or hill out of sight.

Herphandler, if you are truly interested in searching for, finding and recognizing "good junk" ........ I suggest you go to a bookstore and purchase a copy of "Schroder's Antiques - Price Guide" and start by leafing through it from front to back just to familiarize yourself with all the different types of "collectibles".

And remember, one (1) "good find" whether it is in a dump or at a garage sale will be worth the price you paid for the book, ..... and which that will usually result in an infection called "Antique Pox", which is incurable and makes one look in every nook n' cranny for another "good find". ha ha  ;D ;D

Some more bottles I dug up this week.  Haven't cleaned them up yet.

Any thoughts? worth cleaning up good?

Anything look like it's got any potential value.

I was digging up a lot of broken bottles, and what I think were really heavy duty garbage bags. down beside a small creek. think anything of value would be thrown out when they used garbage bags?

Thanks!
