1897 Cigar Holder
« on: June 05, 2008, 03:11:13 am »
I have the following Cigar Holder (I think it is one) See Photo's.

Engraving at the back of the box reads " IBR OR JBR (Initials) and underneath that EDINBURGH 1897"

If I unscrew the box, on the plate some leaves are engraved on it. (It look like silver to me)
There are no markings on it, I think this was made for someone personal.

As I have no idea to start looking for information on this item, maybe you could help me?

Any help Will be great.

Now I do not know for what purpose that was for and it very well may be a "cigar server" ..... rather than calling it a "cigar holder".

If so, then a butler would have placed cigars and a lit candle in it, then it could have been "rolled round the table" from guest to guest, and the "box" would have held a fancy "cigar snipper" (to snip the end off cigar) ........ but that is just a guess.  ::)

Circa 1890's was the Victorian age of "pomp and ..... silver" with butlers and maids and everything imaginable for "serving and eating" made from silver/silver plate.

I mean like they had forty-eleben types of spoons n' forks, one for bout each different food that was served.

So Philistry, I suggest you "search" for Victorian era serving pieces.

Phil, you might first try a UK forum.

Here's one I found for you.

I sure do. Click the following url and you will see a picture of a hammer I posted back in Feb and which I've been "looking" for 15 years give or take.
