1871 School Desk
« on: July 27, 2008, 12:10:18 pm »
Hello everyone. I found this school desk from 1871 at the thrift store yesterday. I've come to understand that the gold paint is not original and have begun the process of removing it. I would, however, like to know if the seat is likely original. Thanks for your help.

I would say it probably is original but most children's desks I've seen are sold wood seats and backs.  Slated would be more labor intensive to produce and therefore probably more expensive to purchase back then.  Check out how the slats are anchored to the metal frame.  That should give you some clues as to the originality.  From your pictures it appears the slats are old and professionally made.  A nice find and well worth the restoration!

Thanks for the info. I am not sure this helps at all, but I did find another very old school desk with a slatted seat as well.
