Old stamp seal?
« on: March 20, 2009, 04:14:13 pm »
My camera phone doesn't have a really good focus so I'll try and explain it in detail as best as I could.

It looks to be an old stamp seal. If it was straightened out (I'm assuming it used to be) it would look like a championship belt (lack of things to compare to). As in that from left to right starts off thin then gets fatter and as it reaches the middle it's a fatter circle type shape then thins out again. But you can tell somebody kind of rounded it so both thin sides would connect to a half ring and then binded it to make an actual ring. The thin parts have a logo which I can't get to show up in a picture so I did a quick paint job. The center cross X looks like it is two rifles criss-crossing. You can also see that it was binded to a half ring.

Any help on identifying this piece and possibly even a value check would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

I'am thinking Army issue. I'am and Ex Marine. crossed rifles were used in both branch's. But eagle & Rifles point's to them. Did you look carefully for any interior mark's. as to sterling etc.

Definitely military - I will send a pic to my brother in Army (Pentagon) and see if he is familiar.  He collects all kinds of memorabilia.

That sure looks like the brass pin on my old class A uniform hat,  Not sure about the side insignia or the fact that it was made into a ring thing, and it don't look brass, but that is the standard insignia of the arm forces, just like the one on the Class A Hat.

I can tell you what it reminds me of....At Ft Hood when they do a change of command the military comes riding in on horses with a horse & wagon/dog, marching band, tanks, etc. (they did this when my brother changed command)  The uniforms the men wore on horseback...they had scarf/neckerchief around their necks (really old military style) and there was a piece to hold the scarf/neckerchief in the front....it has small narrow pieces at the back that can bend slightly to secure.  That is what I believe this to be..only someone had the piece bent to form a ring and secured the bendable pieces together to make it stronger and help form the ring.

Not sure if it was called a neckerchief slide or a bolo....

(I'm sure boy scouts had the same type of ornamental piece on their kerchiefs.)

Haven't heard back from my brother yet!

I'm not too familiar with metals and what not, so I couldn't say what it's made of. It seems fairly tarnished, so perhaps it is brass or bronze. As for markings on the back, there are none. There is a real tiny hole on the back that is off-center and isn't very deep. Kind of looks like a mite was eatin away at it (just an analogy), since it isn't a perfect hole and is real tiny.

Me and my parents were cleaning out a house and we were told we could take whatever we wanted that was being set for trash. Ended up getting a lot of antique stuff including china sets, diner table set, even an old china cupboard, etc. Then there are things like these that we have no clue what they are. The ring is very small and doesn't fit over the first knuckle on my pinky finger. So I don't know if it could of been used as a slide. The bended pieces were binded to a half ring to form a whole ring. So the bended pieces are actually shorter than you are thinking KC. I'm assuming it was a gift to a child. The owner of the house was elderly (80's+) so perhaps it was passed down from a father or used as a memory keepsake. It just looked like an old stamp seal used to seal envelopes shut, but that was just my first impression. I will agree that it is military and the uniform hat pin seems a likely approach. It's just hard to say.

That's all I know about it. I thank all of you for getting this far, I appreciate it. And any more insight is still welcomed. Thank you again.

Just heard back from my brother.... his reply  to the pics "Looks like it could be some kind of antique military ring.  The crest on the front looks a government crest and the side (a bit blurry) looks like it could be cross cannons over cannon balls, which could indicate Army."
