help me identify...please
« on: March 22, 2009, 09:18:35 am »
 have a butter dish, and it looks very old to me. I just wanted to know if it was worth holding on to or not.

I'm no professional, so bear with me;

The butter dish appears to be made of brass. It has that goldish look to it. It seems to be changing colors, my guess is that its some sort of oxidation.

I bet when it was brand new, it was as yellow as the sun...but now it's turning a darker color. You can still see the brass color, but you can also see a brown color. If you look close enough in the light at the oxidized places on the butter dish, you can see tints of green and sometimes red.

As I said above, I am not a professional. The inside of the dish seems to have less oxidization to it, probably because it wasn't exposed to enough air.

I've looked for marks or brands that the company would have put on it but nothing. The company didn't imprint it's name or anything.

The only clue that I have to go on is;

the handle (where you grab to lift the top off) looks to be shaped like a pineapple.

I just wanted to know how old it was and who made it.

Would realy need pics to help, Sounds like a tarnish silverplated dish to me.  It may also be hard to indentify without markings, sometimes the markings can be hidden under the tarnish on the bottom of the item.  90% of the old holloware is marked by hallmarks, without them most likely you have something newer post 60's.  Depending on the enviroment tarnish does not always give clues to age. i.e. Smokers house, woodburning stove and etc, can make tarnish happen very fast.  Again we may be able to pinpoint your item with a couple of pics.

The photo issue's are important due to the fact they can mean the difference in a Big $$$$$ or and error in Id. now the pineapple finial has and is more commonly found in william roger's silver plate.

But like everything else there are Exceptions. for example William Hutton used the pine apple finial. sheffield plate 1920's Big $$$$$$.

We have some very good help here. and there ready willing and able to help but a photo for us is best.
