Hand Painted Cobalt Blue Decorated Pottery Yelloware Strainer ?

Hello all,

I was lucky to find this today, appears to be pretty old and looks to be hand-painted with cobalt blue.

At first I thought it was transfer ware, but looks hand painted in glaze on closer inspection.

I would call it yelloware (or is it yellowware?) , I've never seen a strainer like this and would like to know if anyone recognizes the maker or anything else about the form or decoration or age ?

Its in good shape but with some staining/crazing and a couple of hair line cracks that's pretty common with this type/age of pottery.


Its 5 1/2" wide by 1 1/2" tall,never seen one like it.

A pretty sweet piece of pottery I think, you ?

Typically they come with a matching cup they sit upon I believe, the rest would be guesses at best, but if I was to Evaluate the item from the pics I would say Post war, maybe 30's, but the hallmarks were probably on the missing cup.

Hello again, thanks for that, I was thinking maybe was the top half of an even prettier cup or bowl.

I'm thinking an orange juicer ?

I was looking around a bit at what is called yellowware and learned a bit.  First if it is yelloware most likely is older, seem it fell out of favor in the 30's but goes back to the late 1800's.  Not quite sure yet all about yellowware, but now know what to look for.  Thanks .  Just haven't got enough info in me head yet to know, but working on it.

Pottery like this is very hard to date because it has been made for a long time in the same manner in the united states.I've seen like pieces dated back to the civil war,and they made the same type of utensils in pottery much earlier in Europe .

Yellowware is what I refer to an early American(or European) "yellow clay" pottery object,could be glazed in colors or decorated in glaze.

My first impulse was to say a tea strainer....but a little large (not by much)...but too small in height and width for other typical uses (fruits/vegs).

It is too big for a cup,was definitely made for a bowl.

Would fit a 5" bowl.

I just noticed now,one of the flowers looks like a clover bloom.

KC, I think you might be right, it could very well be a tea strainer ….. for making a cup of herbal tea by placing the herbs, leaves, twigs or bark in the strainer and pouring hot water over them.

It would be considered, yellow ware.

I think what you might have there is known as a 'berry bowl'.

I have seen one , many years ago , that had a 'cup' that nested in the center that was intended for sorbet , cream or ice cream ... perhaps like yours .
