Old Lamp Shades for gas lights
« on: July 10, 2009, 06:15:03 pm »
I was told by the prior owner of our house that this lamp shade is over 100 years old. It was in the house he grew up in and he is 88 years old.  Could someone tell me if this looks that old? What info you may on it. I have 2 of them.

Thanks so much

It's a slag glass shade.  I believe it was made for electricity and not gas.  I'm guessing it probably dates circa 1910 to 1920(ish).  The beaded fringe probably puts it closer to 1920.  It appears to be nice shape and these are rarely signed but some are.  Signed, it's worth more.  Depending upon size with no cracks or chips it's worth anywhere from $200 to $500.  Some signed shades, depending upon the signature are worth more.

railman  is right on here..........Mutua l Lamp Manufacturing is one of many who made art glass domes for  gas, oil and electric. I believe yours is circa 1900-20's. I do not know if yours is Mutual but it is of that era. A nice shade in what appears to be very nice condition..........

............Dependi ng on condition, at live auction I could double that estimate of $200-$500 to $1000.

not to take away from railman as we all know that condition is everything......... ... 8)

Railman - great job!  Great information.

I had to refresh my mind about slag glass. Remembered a glass site that would be helpful for newbies before they become more refined/informed.

So does something like this go up in value as time goes on.  We love them.  But I just lost my job, so we need the money.  Or do we hold onto them.   I wouldn't even know where to sell them.  Well your info has been so helpful with all the things I have asked about.  I have more stuff to show, hope you all don't mind.

Thanks

Tony

Best wishes to you and your family Amd, it is tough out there. But hopefully you'll find something soon and won't have to sell them!

Selling your stuff is only a stop-gap measure.  Sometimes replacing it is very tough.  Get a job no matter what it is.  It doesn't mean it will be a life-long career.  My .02 pesos.
