Glass Plate with Sterling Silver trim
« on: July 22, 2009, 12:52:56 pm »
I came across this glass plate/platter with flowery-leafy design either cut, ground or etched into the glass on the back and around the rim. Then it has a sterling silver lacy pattern overlay applied to it as well as a silver rim. In one of the pictures you can see where it says sterling. I can't find any other markings on it. I want to put it into my store but I'm wandering about price. Is $25 too little? Is $100 too much? Any ideas? Thanks

It look's like the work of Cambridge Glass. I would'nt take any less then $125.00 Dollars for it.

We have some VERY similar pieces in my family which were a wedding gift to my grandparents when they married in 1936, if that helps to give you a ballpark date of when these beautiful pieces were still being manufactured.

Agree that this was around the late 20's to 30's.

I have seen some of these value up to $200 a plate when there is a nice set!

Thanks for the info. When I told my wife what it might be worth she said we're keeping it. Becomes part of the 401k I guess. Did a search on Cambridge glass but couldn't find anything like it. I didn't find anything with the silver overlay on it. Thanks

We had never seen anything like it either, so your post surprised me!

Here's a little more info about silver overlay glass:

The wife checked her Cambridge book and could not find that pattern or anything with a center “etching” such as that platter has. She is currently “hot on the trail” so maybe she will find it in another book or by another vendor.
