I have a Homan Silver Plate Co. Hollowware #1859
« on: July 26, 2009, 08:52:41 pm »
Hello recently I have purchased a rare Homan Silver Plate Co. hollowware Item #1859 , I have also purchased a silver Coronet Plate #1602 , #46 , this item is a serving tray. It has 8 sides with , 8 bunches Of grapes with leaves around the edge , 8 etched vases with 7 holes around each vase , it's centre is an etched design. It stands a 1/2" tall from the edge & 1" tall from the 2 handles. The back is very plain & looks doubled , There is No Coronet Stamp
rather Coronet Plate is engraved on the back , the # 1602 & 46 ARE STAMPED. I would deeply appreciate you helping me in finding out the value of these 2 items if you can?

Scratch welcome to the forum, pictures will help for sure but first I would like to impress that value of most silver plate items is not very high.  The world has been saturated with silverplate espically between the late 1800's through the 1940, when it fell out of favor to the new world of stainless.  Right now so much has been dumped on the market from the deaths of those who treasured then in the early 20th century, seems everybody has been given their grandparents plate and then taken to thrift shops.
Their is a picture of Homan Silver plate Pattern #1859 at replacement.com, a nice serving tray.  Homan is a bit rarer then say International or Onieda which helps a bit with value.  Homan started in the mid 1800 making Pewter, and around the late 1898 they started to make silver plate items and changed their name to Homan Silver plate, and around the early 1900, they again changed their name to Homan Manufacturing company and went out of business in 1941.  With this history one may consider it rare, but not much of a collector base like say Reed and Barton or Towle.  If you can find one who collects Homan you may get $50.00 for a item like I seen on Replacements, in great condition that is.
As for your Coronet items well this company was short lived for their silverplate items and was made in the 1950's. This is a post silverplate boom items, mostly made for Holiday use and would say has very little value at all.  Grapes may help a bit, cause for some reason grapes tend to be very collectiable in the silverplate world.  Please post some pics and we can evaluated your items a bit better, and if you can make sure you get pics of the hallmarks, this is most important in date and value of items.

Thanks ironlord ; for all your help & info. I agree with you 100%.I have googled the hollowware when I 1st brought it home & also found out the history of Homan Silver Plate Co. I have been intouch with replacements.com & thier last e-mail sent to me stated , they were not interested at this time. While surfing the net about the hollowware I found a little message to the right of the page. It stated that recently a rare Homan Silver Plate hollowware has been found. It had 5 bids of $30.90 at the time.

As for the Coronet Plate , this is engraved on it's back & the numbers 1602 & 46 Are stamped. There is no logo on the back of this item. The back is very plain & has only the said info. The back also appears to be doubled1 toppiece , 1 bottom piece & put together some how.

I'm sending pics in 2 parts.          Yours Truly     Scratch519

Thanks again ironlord1963 ; here are some pics of the Coronet Plate , the pic of the bottom is useless but I'm trying to show it's good condition , more than anything. On the back it says " Coronet Plate " , which I think is engraved , there is no logo. The numbers 1602 & 46 , are stamped on it.
