Haven't seen something like this in a long time.  Don't know how big yours is....

They were used to carry large/long logs or pipes.  Usually 2 so someone could carry on the other end!  When automation came around and was more affordable for the small guys they didn't hang around long.  The sling part went under the trunk/pipe and the handles were for....you guessed it....holding with the hand!

If you live in an area that had mills or these were from that area I would bank on that!

Thanks KC.These came from my Grandfathers farm.Their farm was located in Ark.,just at the foothills of the Ozarks. They are 13'' at the widest part, and the chains are 13''.I am glad to know what they were used for.I will clean some of the rust off them, and hang them up,to be passed on.

Hey KC.What were these called?
God bless

Can someone please tell me what this is

A very nice person was helping me, but Im concerned that the thread was lost over time.

I copied all of our Joomla files and put them in a subfolder on the same site and now when I try to log onto the original site I get this error:

This site is temporarily unavailable.
Please notify the System Administrator 2

I reconfigured the subfolders configuration.php, but now I cant log into our phpadmin to create a new database I get this error:

Error
#1045 - Access denied for user al-jadidlocalhost using password: YES

Is this something I can fix? Can our host fix it? Did I trigger something by copying the files?

Thank you for your much needed help.

Oh, our host doesnt have a cpanel

I really don't know the official name at all.  Just know the use.  Sorry can't be of further help on that.

Some of the brains on this site might have a better idea!

Best of luck!

Oh ...it's for pipes or logs,
I see it now!

Look like choker slings for horse-logging , to me .

I think the ends & chain would have been fitted through a slot in a log arch , and would gravity-lock in place from the weight of the lumber .

Now I am going to have to play the Devil’s Advocate on that one and say it looks to me like something for “harnessing” a horse or team of horses up with or to, a quick “connect/disconnect” per say. The end pieces are made to swivel and when one end of said is folded against its connected center link it can be slipped through a “ring” on the harness and then unfolded, “locking” it there so it won’t come back out.

Now I guess 2 people could use 1 of them to carry a heavy log or piece of pipe but I would think that would be awful tough on their fingers if they tried to carry it very far.

Besides, peavys, cant hooks and "timber carriers" are much better for 2 people to use for carrying logs with, to wit:

And ps, I was looking at that picture of a “log arch” in post #6 ……. and I’m not sure how effective that sucker would have worked. The way they are in the picture, iffen one pulled them across uneven ground, he would lose them. Ya gotta get the ends of those logs off the ground iffen you are gonna drag them like that and I don’t see how that “cross-beam” could/would cantilever to “pick” them up.

Just a plain ole “grab chain” would work better than that.

I think the way those in the pic worked, was as they were pulled they tightened up on the logs. That's why they are called ''choker chains''.

Yea cougar I guess they could have been something to harnessing up a team. After holding them the way KC said, seems like they would work well for moving, logs or pipe. But I will say that I am not sure.

Thanks for all the help,if anyone has anything else,I would like to here.
Thanks,and God bless,Keith

Modern versions of the log arch are much lower to the ground than the old boys were .

Principle used is the same , though .... the log arch 'tongue' would be disconnected from the hitch & used as a long lever to position and lift logs ; it then would be reconnected to the hitch .

Keith, ''choker chains'' don't work very well for logging, they are hard to get on ...... and even harder to get off.

Only a tractor with a hydraulic "grabber" works better than this, to wit:

Joe, bout that pictured "log arch", I was looking at the chains draped over the "arch", ..... and there ain't no way to rotate that "arch" to lift those logs off the ground. So either the chains are too long or the wheels too small for that sucker to work.

Of course I realize that pictured one is only "for show" to thrill the "city-slickers" and the logs are lying on the ground to prevent anyone from getting hurt, so I'll cut them some slack on that.

I stand corrected about the fulcrum thingie I said . I really don't know beans about horse-logging .

Emailed the son of a horse-logger in Mo. , and he said that they'd make staging areas for dragging .
Two methods his Pa used were -
1 - digging out a couple of 'ruts' for the wheels to lower the log arch chassis for choking logs
2 - dragging the logs over a 'roller' made from another log to elevate the end of the one(s) that would be choke-chained to the log arch .

I'm glad to have not made the career choice of being a horse-logger ... it really looks like tough , dangerous work .
My hats' off to those who do .

Thanks KC, cogar, and regularjoe, for the help
cogar,I think back in those days, everything was hard. The way they worked back then would kill most good men these days, anyway,I'm with joe,I've done a little saw milling, but I know very little about modern logging, and nothing about horse logging.
If my piece in my picture is something for a team,I'd like to see how it was used. The info you guys give me,will give me something to go by to do a little more searching.

Thanks again,God bless,Keith
