Parrot that can't talk
« on: August 05, 2009, 09:26:10 pm »
Hello
I got this parrot that I bought on the wkend at a flee market. It looks real nice but i was wandering if anybody could tell me anything about it.
Its about 9cm height so its small and weight about 100 gram.
Probably a 20th century reproduction. But its style is somewhat familiar, can't remember where i've seen it thought.

Is it hollow like a urn, or Pitcher?  And if so does the mouth have a opening to pour from?  At first glance it looks copper, but copper is not a good thing for consumeables.  Would think it was brass, or do you know what the metal is.  It is a very unique item, and this in it self can mean value, espically since it is a bird.   I don't see any hallmarks are there any?    I think we can make this parrot talk  ;D.

After looking closer to the pics, I can see that it has no opening in the mouth.  Then went on to look close at the manufacting process.  It almost appears the the line embellishment on the item was added after casting.  Not really sure without looking closer if so that would kinda indicate a bit of hand work.   Then I noted the nice clean look with little to no natural patina on the metal, very well cared for or really new.

Its fairly light about 100-150g so we can assume that its hollow.
Don't think there is any hallmark, but then again I'm blind as a bat when it comes to these things.
How do i check to see if its brass or copper?
I don't think its suppose to be use for consumable as its too small, only 9 cm in height plus no opening.
Its tiny so you can assume that it spent most of its life indoor which could explain the no patina.
This styling reminds me of something that I've seen before, but can't remember what. Does it reminds anyone of anything?
