K.,T.&K Platter
« on: August 06, 2009, 08:28:11 pm »
This white platter which measures 18"x13 1/2"  has a subtle ivy or scroll pattern on the 4  edges.
The mark on the bottom didn't photograph well, it has a 10 pointed medallion with what looks like an
eagle in the center, above the medallion it says warranted, below it has K.,T.&K granite. I have
found it is the Knowles, Taylor and Knowles Co. It is one piece I found along with some Homer
Laughlin, Sebring and a piece marked Stella Cliff, in an abandoned barn 25 years ago. I would like to
discover when this piece was made and whether it would be attractive to a collector. Thank you for
your time.         Best Regards, Nicolle<a href="http://s857.photobucket.com/albums/ab135/nikkishewolf/?action=view&current=078.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i857.photobucket.com/albums/ab135/nikkishewolf/078.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket">

Value on a platter is usually somewhat low, first there is only a moderate collector base, and the most sought after is either rare or even better very decorative, lots of embellishment and such.  You have a Knowles which is a Late 19th century company,   (1870 - 1929), not to be confused with edwin knowles.  Your platter is cir 1890 - 1907, at least the hallmark I have found in my book.  This gives it some impressive age and would be considered a Antique, However this is a very plain stoneware platter.  I would say you best bet for value is $25.00, Since it has a good hallmark.   I would be intrested in see the other of the other items if possible.

Thank you very much for the information and the time you took to do all this, it's greatly appreciated.
I hope these other item pictures come through. This other platter is 15 1/2"x12 1/2", it has a floral and
berry motif with a butterfly and what looks like another butterfly or moth. It seems to be a mulberry
color is what I was told. There is a mark that says Stella Cliff.  The Sebring gravy boat is 8 1/4"x3 1/4".
It has a floral pattern around rim. The Laughlin piece is 6 1/4"x3 1/4". It's marked Homer Laughlin
Made in U.S.A.  H 54 N 8. It has floral pattern on each side and  silver color on rim. Found alot of info
on Laughlin. Once again Thank You. Best Regards, Nicollehttp://i857.photobucket.com/albums/ab135/nikkishewolf/stuffetc002.jpg[/IMG]

At this moment I know little about the marking os Sebring and Stella Cliff, When I get home for work I will poke around a bit.  As for the Homer, They are good about date marking their items, this one was made in 1954.  There is a far amount of collectors of Homer stuff, but mostly ones with exceptional decorations or someone looking for a particular pattern.  If you wish you could go to Repalcements.com and if you can find the pattern name this will help a lot in finding a home for it.
The Gravy boat is a wonderful looking item, this in itself will help the value, just need to look into the hallmark of Sebring.  There are many collectors of gravy boats and if in excellent condition you may have a pretty good winner here, but need to look a bit to be sure..
I'm alspo kinda intrested in the other platter, as you called the color mulberry.  Not sure I seen anything like that either.  Again I  will poke around a bit for you later, unless someone else pipes in before.

Stella is the name of the transferware pattern and Cliff. Looks like the label is from the early to mid 1900's.

I have read that this may be used by J Dimmock & Co, Hanley, Staffordshire England, Earthenware (1862 - 1904) however, the mark would have been imprinted on the plate and wouldn't have a foil label at that time that I am aware of.
I'm from the South - but please don't mistake my Southern Manners/Accent/Charm as a weakness!

Thank you kindly for the information, I greatly appreciate it. Another avenue to go down. The mark on
the back is underneath whatever treatment that was used on the whole thing. Sorry if it looks like a
foil stamp. Have to invest in a better camera when I'm able to.
Thank you again for your time and hard work. Best Regards, Nicolle

paper label's first appeared on china etc about. 1909 if it had been a foil sticker it would have been in the 40's.

I poked around a bit and found general information on Sebring and little on Cliff.  Cliff as stated by KC, seems to bring up J. Dimmock ...  Staffordshire... etc. but pretty sure that is not who made This platter.  When time permits I may look a bit more.  As for Sebring this is another Liverpool OH Comapny, in the city of Sebring OH, company closed in the 40's.  It would like to see the hallmark on the Sebring Gravy Boat.  This item has some promise of good value.
In general Stoneware, Earthenware, Ironstone items do have a moderate collector base.  One thing also is most collectors of these items really care less about the hallmark and more about How the item looks in the deco.  There is a serious collector world for Earthenware items, but they seek out items that are usually the cream.  Another good thing about pieces like these is many are looking to finish or replace something in there set.  If you can find the pattern name, you have a far better chance.   Generally speaking good or great items (No Flaws) are worth $20.00  Most people if they want a item they are willing to pay $20.00, usually less but if it will help them finish their goal, that Jackson will slide easily from that wallet.   Want more then you have to know the story, Company, History, or previous owners name you can tack on a few more bucks.  The best item to break this Ceiling is that gravy bowl.  If you dig enough you may be able to bring that into the $50.00.

You're very kind in getting back to me. I didn't realize that I didn't send you all the pictures, not very
helpful, so sorry. I'm still unearthing these treasures from that barn that I've had packed away. At least
I think they're treasures. Hope these pictures get through, the first one should be the platter marked
Stella Cliff then the gravy boat bottom. Thank You again. Best Regards, Nicolle

Thanks,  I did look through my books for the hallmark on the Sebring gravyboat, didn't see anything close yet.  It is a bit out of Focas, can you write the word for me.  Maybe a clue lay here or at least see if maybe we can get a pattern name.  I Think this could be a bit of a treasure.  I also like the platter and find this a bit unique also.  Are those stains on the platter ? or just part of the pattern or just camera stuff, looks kinda stained up in the pic.

I need a better camera. Yes there are some stains on the platter, it was the condition I found it in. It has crazing throughout and I'm concerned about what to use on it if anything. I'm open to suggestions.
I don't want to do anything in ignorance. The Sebring piece says Ivory Porcelain by Sebring Reg. U.S.
Pat Off  Pat 2-24-1925   It also has crazing throughout the piece and some stress fractures? There is
also a couple of rim chips on the base. Are these issues repairable?  Thank you again for your interest
and time. Best Regards, Nicolle

Condition is first and foremost with pieces, basically it will cut out any serious collectors.  Not much can be done and should not be done with them, the value to repair items would be more then it worth and then the value is not really changed.  Small chips and some grazing on very rare items may still attract a serious collector.  Since you found these items then you have still scored, if you have to sell them they will a thrift store prices, a few bucks, or you could just dust off a spot on the shelf and admire them yourself.  The gravy bowl and Platter are nice items to look at, then if you look at them long enough you will get the Antique bug like we have all caught here  ;D, No cure of course but can be really fun.  ;D.  You said you are still digging things out of the barn?  Do you have more diamonds in the rough coming for us to enjoy?  :D :D :D

That lovely barn was in Western Pa. and I reside in S.C. Pa. now and the barn was torn down 20 years
ago. So these pieces have been in storage for almost 25 years. Will probably be moving within the next
year or so and might not be able to take everything with me. Down sizing. The K.,T.&K platter and the
Laughlin bowl are in good shape. Even if I can't sell the gravy boat  and the Stella Cliff platter, I'll enjoy
them and keep trying to find out more info. on them. I'm fascinated about that Cliff platter.
Actually I did dig a few more things out of storage today! I found 2 Anchor Hocking Jadeite saucers in
what I found out is the Alice pattern. One is marked with an anchor and one is not. Did lots of research
today. Also found a lovely floral patterned oval shaped bowl that says Germany on the bottom, and 3
pretty glass bottles with what look like silver lids. The one bottle has a glass stopper and a silver lid
stamped Sterling inside. There is something else in there, but I need to get a magnifying glass to see.
Fun but frustrating. The lids on the other bottles are very decorative florals. Will get pictures.
Thank you again for your time and patience with a newbie who knows next to nothing.

Best regards, Nicolle
