George Harvey Etching (added Pictures!)
« on: September 12, 2009, 11:32:32 am »
Greetings! I've recently come across a very large etching signed Geo Harvey 1844 (or it might be 1866, the date is very hard to read). I have been trying to determine who the artist is, but I've run into a bit of a stumbling block.

There is a George W. Harvey who did etchings, but (if I read the date as 1866) he would have only been 11 when this piece was done, so that doesn't work.

Then I found a George Harvey (1800-1878) who could maybe be the artist (I even found a cite that said he sometimes signed his art as Geo. Harvey), but I can't find any information on him doing etching. It looks like he mainly did oil paintings and water colors.

The etching is very large, maybe 30" wide and 20" in height and appears to be of a school house just being dismissed for the day.

This piece appears to be double framed. A large wooden frame had enclosed the golden inner frame (or so it would seem. I have not had the courage to take the outer frame off for a closer look inside.)

Any information on this piece would be wonderful. It has been hanging in one of my main rooms for about a year and I would love to know more about it.

Thank you!

I'am inclined to believe your reading the date wrong. there was a George Harvey 1855 to 1930 who did painting's etching's.

Hmmm, those 4's could be very sloppy 9's. Maybe the date is 1899, but I couldn't find any information on if George w. Harvey ever signed his etching Geo Harvey.

Gizmo, these are pics of the signature of George Wainwright Harvey ( http://thistlefineart.com/Harvey.htm ) on an etching sold here:

http://www.wiederseim.com/auction_06_20_2009/photos_b.html

Original etching “Steamboat Wharf- Gloucester Harbor 1927”, George Wainwright Harvey, Annisquam, Mass. 13”x11.25”

Played with it a bit to try and bring it out more, maybe you could compare these to the signature on yours.

It could be George W. Harvey. I couldn't get a good picture of the signature on the etching. The artist signed so that the G looks like it loops forward to cross the H. I wish I could get a better picture of it, but the crosshatching behind it really makes it impossible.

Thanks for the help!

It is Geo W Harvey....Geo short for George!

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it's a George W. Harvey now. I was thrown by the date, which really looked like 1844, but I think those are just really opened ended and sloppy nines. 1899 would make more sense. The bio on him says that he really started doing more etchings in the early 1900's, so this could be one of his firsts for that era maybe?

One more question, if I may be so bold; has anyone every come across one at sale or for auction that was this size? I'm either finding Harvey's paintings or smaller etchings, but I'm have trouble finding an intact large piece. If anyone finds a site or recalls anything, I'd love to know. Thanks!

First of all your interest, in size would be the black & white portion of the print. not the formatting or frame. as for the signature. it changes as we age but most often not for the better. >:(

;) Good points! I had measured the piece from the white boarders around the black and white portion. The signature is slightly different, but you are perfectly right, signatures change over time.
