Old Tin (Military?) Cup with Folding handles and Lid ~ Help!
« on: October 08, 2009, 03:38:53 pm »
Hi,
Found this at a flea market.  Handles fold in and lid comes off.  Can anyone tell me what it was used for or how old it might be?

Thanks,
Ria

The rolled edge first appeared in the 1900's. the way the handles are attached they would transfer heat. so it's unlikely it was designed for cooking.

Thanks, the lady who sold it said they used it for scooping water?

Almost to the point of looking like it was added, or rather the acorn looks a bit out of place, even has different patina look. Just a observation.  Looks like the design of a modern camp cup/pan.

My parents had an ashtray on the den table similar (not the exact same).  They were made many in the early 1900's with lids to hold in the stale smell!  It didn't have grooves for holding the cigarettes either!
