Am curious to know what the writing on the back says , dhoppy ... I could only make out a word or two from your posted image (too dark to see it well) .

Thanks .

dhoppy, the only way to make a reasonable guess as to the age of your picture is if you know the approximate age the person was when the photograph of the person was taken that the drawing was made from, that’s assuming that is how it was made.

I say that because the wife has similar sized pictures of her relatives, one of which she also has a copy of the photograph it was made from. She was told that another relative had sent the photographs to an artist somewhere who “drew/painted” the pictures from the photos. She also has a photo of another picture of an Aunt that was made using pastels (colored). See the following 3 photos.

The 1st one is a photo of an actual photograph of her Aunt (1881-1917) and the 2nd one is the charcoal drawing of her. The 3rd one is a photo of the pastel drawing of another Aunt (1875-1904) .

Dhoppy, if this is a relative of yours and you know a little information about her such as where she lived, I may be able to look her up on Ancestry.com. That way we could figure out an approximate date for your drawing. I have a few days left on my subscription. However, if she is unidentified, the next best way to date the drawing I think would be to start researching the style of her clothing. That's usually a good way to determine the date. Hairstyle could also help. I agree though, my first reaction was that her dress style looks to be Civil War era, especially the conservative little white collar. I'd start researching Civil War fashions and go from there.

The Costumer's Manifesto is a great resource:

dhoppy, is there a signature in the corner? Possibly starting with a Y, M or H ?  Having trouble here getting it clear and don't know if it's just a color blip on my part.  :-\
