Little Pitcher have Big Ears
« on: November 12, 2009, 10:01:57 am »
I have a 4" high "little pitcher with big ears" that I believe originally belonged to my grandmother.  I want to pass it on to a niece but would like some information on origin and value.  The base is white with 3 pink/green roses, gilded spout lip and large pink ear handles.  The company name is scripted in gilt on the bottom but can't read all the letters.  It's a fairly long name starting with "G" and may be two words.  The patent number is 154691.  I know the origin of the saying but can't find anything like it on line.  Can anyone help?

Can you post some pictures including any marks or writing on it?

I'll give it a try later today but the process is new to me.

"Young children often overhear something they should not. For example, Don't use any swear words around Brian--little pitchers have big ears. This metaphoric expression, which likens the curved handle of a pitcher to the human ear, was already in John Heywood's proverb collection of 1546."

This saying has been documented in many stories since then - mostly in the late 1800's to early 1900's.

I have spent a couple of hours trying to attach photo(s) but it either times out or tells me the file is too large.  Any suggestions?

Welcome to the forum , Beko.

I regularly take digital images @ around 10 Megapixels and have to 'resize' the images for posting on-line .

Keep an eye out (in 'properties' of your image file(s) ) that the kilobytes count is down towards the 1000 number , or much lower (even down to 150 or so) , to post images here .

Thanks for trying so hard to post them .

The simplest solution is to "Save a Copy for E-mail or Web" and then upload the copy.

Upload your photos on to http://www.photobucket.com and then you can paste a link to the photos here. If you have any trouble you can email me the photos and I'll upload them.  :)

Here goes a try for the pictures.  I couldn't get a clear representation of the base of the piece.

Holy cats!!  :o You weren't kidding were you?!!! I was picturing something entirely different, thinking that the big ears would be represented in a more euphemistic way. This is quite literal!!!

Thanks for your help with the attachments.  You have all been very helpful.  The pitcher is great.  I've loved it since I was a kid.
