Unknown copper or bronze incense burner? from Ottoman Empire? Please help

Hi, can some one please help me with the identification of this piece. I got it from a family friend that was stationed in Japan in the 1950's, and she said that it was an incense burner or hibachi. I was recently told that it was Turkish from the Ottoman Empire. Can someone identify this? It has no makers marks or other distinguishing markins as to period or area of origin, however after being told that it was turkish I did notice some writing on one side of it that may indeed be Turkish. and have tried to attach a picture of the writing.

Could you please give the dimentions of your item , and possibly an image of the 'unit' open (lid off) ?

I can say that it is middle-eastern for certain , and possibly an insence censor .

It appears to be copper ... is this correct ?

The item is 10.25" in diameter and 8" tall. I will attach some more pics of it.

Still curious about what type of metal your item is made from , carol .

Most incence censers , from that part of the world , were 'footed' (they had little legs on them) in order to avoid fire/heat damage to whatever they were sitting on ; this also aided airflow to the burning incense .


I'm not too much on the 'incense - burner' boat on this one .

Hibachi's are Japanese in origin!  This isn't one!  Does appear more middle eastern.  Any markings at all on the bottom or scrutinize the design very well....many artisans put identifying marks in their decorations.

The only markings are the flower designs, and the writing that is pictured in picture 004

You know I've been looking at this object now a couple times, and I just thought could it be a serving tray with a lid. Let's say you have a celebration outside even in, you'd cover the food to protect it from insects, just to keep it covered. I say this because I thought of the no legs on it, The heat would burn a surface.

Could you post a pic of the bottom?  Does it look like it has been "heated"?
