Sikes Desk Chair
« on: November 16, 2009, 07:27:56 pm »
I have recently acquired this desk chair. I was told it was from the 1920s. The tag is from Sikes Furniture Company, Buffalo, New York. The chair is very solid and heavy. It appears to be oak. Perhaps tiger. The top part pivots. Does anyone have a guess about age and rarity? Also, does anyone know about the Sikes Furniture Company's history? Would this be expensive to refinish? Would refinishing diminish the value?

Thank you!

I just saw your chair color difference. It sold for $550. The site was reardon restorations inc. online. It from around 1916.

Nice little chair , thayla .

You can contact the Sikes family at :
http://sikes-sykesfamilies.rootsweb.com/furniture.htm

They've got some history about Sikes chairs & the Company , as well as a place to add your chair (& it's story) images .

Just a word of caution , though .... they're not in the business of setting values on furniture .
They're many images of Sikes chairs there .

I'd say that you'd certainly diminish the value of your chair by refinishing it .

It looks more like Maple to me.

Thank you very much. Is this a rare chair? I can't find it on any Web sites, including eBay. Also, is restoration of chairs such as these expensive? What would this have been used for?

It might be rare as far as a Sikes chair is concerned but it is not a rare collectible. It doesn’t appear to me to need restoration, maybe a “stripping” and re-varnishing, if you prefer. It is a typical office chair of that era. I have a similar one that is made of oak which sits in front of the old oak Pump Organ that I had to recondition and refinish for the wife.
