Need ANY info about Tiger Oak buffet
« on: November 21, 2009, 12:48:06 am »

Hi. I have had this buffet (i guess it's called though i use it as a dresser) for about 20yrs. I know it
once had a top. I haven't seen anything else with this kind of top (rounded off at the corners) I love it and the bottom inside has been replaced and I haven't found any markings. As far as I can tell everything you can see is original. The drawer on the left is 'felt' inside. I'd love to know how old it is and wish i knew where it was made and by whom. Anything would be great if you could let me know. Thank-you for your time.  :) Pic included
also....how do i clean it and should i use furniture polish on it?

The style is 18th century, it 's Tiger Oak. I would suggest Old English Clear Liquid furniture polish. the spray's only gum up the finish. The liquid will absorb in to the wood.

Could we get a side view of the drawer construction ?

Hi, I'll have hubby take a pic of the drawer when he can. it's dovetailed. I wish i knew what yr it was within a 20yr period or so and wish i could find a pic of one like it before the top was removed. I guess it just sat on it. the buffet is very deep.
I have other pieces not as nice but i know not worthless i have questions about that i'll save for next.

will get drawer photo asap.

thank you for answering me. if anyone else has any info i'd love it. :)

Strangely enough. it has a Water Fall style.which was common from the 1920's to about 1940. water fall was commonly attributed to a cheap ply wood furniture.

the dove tail's will help determine if it's. lets say 1870's  or 1920's

Water fall had nothing to do with the criss crossing of the wood grain it has to do with the''fall'' or curvature of the furniture.

In that "the buffet is very deep", had a top cabinet/shelves and has Queen Ann legs, .... my guess is 1870'ish. ;) ;)

My brain didn't catch the fact that it had a top piece at one time.

What are the dimensions of the piece?  History?

Hi again. Have included a sideview of the drawer that has grey felt in it. It's full of stuff so i didn't want to empty it. The drawer Or side size (deepness) is 22in but with the curve in the middle in the front it's over 2feet deep and about 4feet wide in front. Dove tailing in front and back of drawers both. One handle is broken but i won't take it off ...wish i could find a missing handle just like it.  I wish i knew what it looked like when new and who made it. I got it at a flea mkt i know at least twenty yrs ago.  :)

having trouble trying to send pic of drawer......

i'm sorry the pic wouldn't go larger and be accepted. If i misunderstood about depth, the top drawers are five inches deep and the bottom larger drawer is just over six inches deep.

thanks for putting up with me. I have other pieces i have questions about but this piece is my favorite. I didn't get much in my divorce but I did demand that and the sofa lol.

It's 1920's or so. it should bring $450.00 Dollars at auction. Horton Brass is a company on line. who would likely have your handle pull.

The only thing. I could think that might get you blocked would be Porno. unless it was and art form. Railman could speak better than I on that subject.

i was just kidding. I have an old walnut dresser that yrs ago was in a flood and the doors came off it. a relative painted it white. I took it and asked a man to strip it and he asked me not to repaint it because it was solid walnut and he thought too pretty so my ex made some plain doors to cover the drawers that have cut outs (you can see into the drawers if doors are open) and i tole painted them. It has a neat shape and i know it's not an antique but i do believe it's old.
also have some passed down heywood wakeman furniture that was so mistreated it breaks my heart and i'm slowly refinishing it and it's not something i'm very knowledgable about.

also have a dining set totally old but (was husbands grandmothers) legs are cracked and chairs are slowly being stripped and have many spindles that will be hard to strip. Reminds me of hancock shape but there's no mark and they have been put through heck. I cannot just throw these away. If i have to store them on the porch and wait til spring i somehow will try my best to restore them. We could use the furniture. The dining suit only has three chairs and i need a chair that i can add to the other's even if it's just an old one that looks even remotely like these. I can't afford something expensive.
i have my hands full and winter is coming and i don't have a garage. more to come after i've dealt with this. i'll take pics of before and after. so they do look bad but are still pretty sturdy.
one thing at a time............... that's why i said i hope you don't get tired of me.  :)

D&B i could kiss you for telling me it is a waterfall buffet. I wasted so much time in google images trying to find anything with that kind of top.
ok so i'm easy to please but i typed that in and now i'm having fun looking at other's with the same kind of curve....

thank-you
