Belfort Lion Age?
« on: December 03, 2009, 12:23:09 pm »
Hi-
Any way to tell how old something like this is.
It is very smooth if that might help and it measures 7 x 4 x 4.
Thanks

Grrrrrrrrowl!! (that was a lion growl) You're welcome! It looks like the original giant lion statue at Belfort was completed in 1880, so your statue would have to be later than that, that gives us a starting point at least!

I saw a reference a couple of months ago (while doing some French history research at the Project Gutenberg website) to a 'souvenir lion' being searched for by an American during the First World War , in the city where the lion statue stands (1917) .

He had no luck in finding one ; perhaps it was one identical to yours ?

That's something to think about Regularjoe2. Appreciate you bringing it to my attention.
What is the 1917 in your post in reference too?

The metal lion is a white metal (I'm guessing) and it's not solid.
The black base looks to be a granite like material an my guess at the total weight would be in the area of 2-3 lbs. It is heavy.

The 1917 was my ref to the date in the 'searching American' diary (when he was actually looking 4 a lion) & the timeframe of the book/article I was studying .
