Fenton Lamp
« on: January 04, 2010, 11:49:42 am »
I have what I'm told is a Fenton Lamp.  However, I cannot find any information as to how old or how valuable it is.  Any help would be appreciated!

If indeed a Fenton lamp the price would start around $250.00 & up depending on age & if in fact  it is Fenton. The shade is what seems to be burmese glass, In 1885, Frederick Shirley, an Englishman who immigrated to America, patented the formula for an opaque, heat-sensitive glass which, when warmed-it, shaded from lemon yellow to salmon pink. In 1969, after many trials, Fenton chemist Charles Goe replicated Shirley's formula, & it has become one of the most collectible Fenton colors.   Burmese contains pure gold, & careful reheating coaxes the delicate pink shading into existence.   The yellow color comes from a small amount of depleted uranium in the batch.   Over the years, there has been variation in the color of the yellow from greenish to a cream hue.  It is called Burmese glass due to Queen Victoria, she thought the color reminded her of a Burmese sunset.

I'm sure you have looked for the fenton Logo, that is on some of their items.  Most Fenton had paper labels, my aunt collects fenton glass, and I have had only a couple of pieces.  Sure looks Fenton to me.  And thanks for the info Wendy great stuff to fill my head with.  I would agree with the value given by windy.   Lots Of fenton glass collectors to fight over the cool stuff, this of course can be in your favor.

Thanks for the info Wendy!  And yes, I have looked for the Fenton logo, but it is my understanding that they didn't use a logo until around the 70's.  I've been told this lamp is older than that.

Thanks apatter, I was unaware of that info on the logo and label.  Thats why I like this site, a tid bit a day keeps the appraiser away  :D.  My Guess would of been 50's based on looks, but Wendy's post of Fenton about Burmese Glass development in 1969 may challange that.  Once again thanks for the tid bit and very wonderful looking lamp.

Answer to question on Fenton logo--  glass prior to 1973 does not have the Fenton embossed logo. Here is a great site on the history of Fenton and how they marked pieces. www.fentonartglass. com/history/labels.htm

Those museum photos are great!  The last one (Display 80) at least appears to be similar glasswork to my lamp.  When I get this bulb replaced I'll get some photos posted of this thing lit up.
