dutch dictionary 1893
« on: February 14, 2010, 06:21:41 am »
hello there everyone, i hope you someone here can help me with a Dutch Dictionary my dad picked up from the tip!
this book is all in Dutch language and it was made in 1893 by R. K. Kuipers, so this book is over 100 years old! wow!  :o
its a little old book with exactly 1200 pages. iv done some research on the book already and it says that this was the first dutch dictionary but i cant find how rare the dictionary is or what the price of it is. the book had no paper cover on it when we found it and the pages are very old, smelly, hard and stuck together. also the spine is very tatted and ruined and the pages are all un-even. there is also a signature on the second page, i took a picture of it up-close and i didn't write it, i dont know who wrote it because im only 15 years old okay, this book is older than me!
here are some pictures.

Hi Krystina, this is great that you are taking an interest in history and antiques at a young age! A lot of us here started by being fascinated with old things when we were 15 or even younger.

Sounds like you have a good start on the research of this book. It looks like the first printing of it was a little earlier in 1864 and it was reprinted again as recently as 1998. Now that's a good, useful book that can do that! From what I could find, it seems to be the book that standardized Dutch language and spellings.

It sounds like the condition of the book will be a problem as far as it's value, but the important thing to remember is that sometimes useful-much loved and worn items have the deepest sense of history. So even if it turns out that the book doesn't have a lot of monitary value, it does have history and a wonderful past to have survived all these years.

According to this Web page your book is "very rare"!  ;D

Here is what is says about it and the value they placed on the book in the condition described:
6113 KUIPERS, R.K. Volledig woordenboek der Nederlandsche taal. Afleidind-Synoniemen-Zegswijzen-Spreekwoorden.. . X + 1200 p., met registers: bastaardwoorden en Nederlandse plaatsnamen. 1893 Amsterdam : Elsevier HARDCOVER: (Orig. red cloth, bit rubbed, one page loose, else VERY GOOD) VERY RARE. [KEY WORDS: Dictionaries Woordenboeken linguistics taalkunde ] € 89.50

I hope this helps as a start and that the others here can add more!
